Chatham Blanketeer Vol. 6 ELKIN, N. C., MARCH 4, 1940 No. 8 Finishing Plant Moved to Elkin March 4th TTz:' 1 V w; The above picture ihows two views of the present Chatham Manufacturing Company. Bottom photo is of the regular Elkin plant, housing the manufacturing end of the business. Top photo is a view of the new half-million dollar finishing plant where products are to be finished and shipped to markets all over the world. This building is approximately three times the size of the Winston-Salem plant. At the time this picture was made the building was not completed. Landscaping and the beautification of the grounds are yet to come. New Finishing Plant Begins Production On March 4th, the Finishing Plant from Winston-Salem began operation in the new building re cently constructed in Elkin. The new structure cost one-half mil lion dollars and is three times as big as the original plant in Win ston-Salem. . ^ „ The Ch^'tham MEnufEcturing Company was founded in the early 1870’s by Mr. Alexander Chatham and Mr. Thomas L. Gwyn, of Elkin. The first build ing was a wooden frame building along the banks of the Big Elkin creek. Mr. G. T. Roth, of Phila delphia, was employed to super vise the installation of machin ery and to train men and women in the manufacture of woolen cloths, knitting yarns and a few blankets. The plant grew and plans were soon under way for the erection of a new brick struc ture near the railroad. By this time Mr. Chatham’s three sons, Hugh, Richard and Paul, had reached maturity and were taking an active part in the business. They purchased the stock owned by Mr. Gwyn and soon had plans (Continued on Page Ten)
